Steen lived most of his life in Denmark, but now calls Toowoomba in SE Queensland, Australia home. He has a Master of Science from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and has also studied at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Being an entrepreneur at heart, he established one business supplying natural stone, and another one supplying torque wrenches in Australia.

Steen has worked as senior exploration geologist in Australia, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo, within a range of commodities, such as coal, iron ore, copper and lead-zinc. He is fluent in English and the Scandinavian languages, and competent in French and German. Steen is member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
